Is your personal life getting in the way of your leadership?

Is your personal life getting in the way of your leadership?

It’s easy to let the things outside of work affect our mood at work. It could be an argument with a loved one, a bad journey to work, financial issues, bereavement…the list of possibles is super long.

You may think you hide what’s going on by not mentioning it BUT everyone can feel it in your energy. Even if they don’t ask if you are ok, you may notice that the people around you steer clear of you, don’t engage in conversation or make knowing glances to each other whilst you pretend to be your usual self.

If the personal issue is in your head, it’s in your heart and body…which means you will be transmitting it to everyone around you!

What can you do about it?

I have a strategy that I have used successfully for many years, as have my clients so I know it will work for you too with a bit of practice. Here’s what you do…

Imagine a big yellow skip outside your office.

Before you go in, put all your personal stuff in the skip…all of it.

Go into your office in the knowledge that you can pick up your stuff when you are done for the day…if you still want to.

On the way out you put all your work stuff into the skip so that it doesn’t impact on your personal life, safe in the knowledge that you can pick up your stuff when you return the next day…if you still want to.

This simple process is an instruction to your mind to park stuff until you return. Your mind is very happy to do this when you create an understanding that you have the choice to collect what you put in if you want to.

It doesn’t have to be a big yellow skip…that’s what I use and most of my clients do too because it’s simple. You can, of course, be creative and come up with your own but there is one rule you must take into consideration.

Your mind will resist like hell if you try putting your stuff in something like an imaginary shredder or something similar. This removes the choice to pick it back up when you want to, so your mind won’t want to let go which renders this concept useless.

If you want 100% focus

Try it for a few days and notice the difference. For me it means I can be 100% focused on work when I am at the office…and 100% focused on my personal life when I’m not.

Remember too that if you need to jump into either arena when not there you still have the choice and mindset to do so.

This concept takes a bit of practice so keep applying until you master it. It’s so worth it…for you and the people around you!

Until next time,

Leigh 🙂

About the author

Hi I’m Leigh Ashton of The Sales Consultancy

Whether you’re a small business or a leading brand, an area manager or a Chief Executive, whether you’re new to sales or an experienced sales professional. Even if you’re not in sales at all but want to understand it, you’ve come to the right place.

The World of Sales is changing.

Today’s conventional sales training doesn’t address the psychological barriers that get in their way.

My approach takes your sales team through a process that:

* Helps them identify their psychological barriers and gives them the tools to overcome them
* Teaches them how the mind works so they can keep motivated and stay focused
* Gives them the ability to identify the psychological patterns of their clients and prospects so they connect with them at a deeper level and close more sales

And at a higher level…

* It creates more success in other areas of their lives so they are happier generally…and happier sales people generate more sales

Wherever you are on your personal sales journey what’s the best course of action for YOU.
